Day 2 of 12 Day Holiday Survival Guide Tips to making holiday travels easier

Are you traveling for the holidays? Winter holidays can bring fun visits with family and exciting vacations. The stress that comes from traveling with kids, however, is unwelcome. Start your holiday travels right with these tips to keep kids entertained while in the car, flying, on a layover or even sitting in the hotel.

  • Carefully plan when you leave. To avoid early bathroom breaks, leave before you eat and bring a packed meal. If it works for your family, try leaving early in the morning or later in the evening so that the kids sleep through most of the trip.
  • Pack the kids’ favorite things. Make sure kids have their favorite things to occupy them–a pillow, their “lovey”, a blanket, books, a few toys and coloring books. Kids should be able to reach these items from their seat.
  • And pack a few surprises. Grab a few new items, such as a game, book or toy, before you leave and stash them away. When the kids start to get bored, you can pull these out for more entertainment.
  • Bring your families’ favorite music or some books on tape to enjoy together. Pop these into the car stereo or in your player with headphones and a headphone splitter, then sing along together (quietly though when on the plane.)
  • On road trips, play car games. Here are a few we shared on our blog last year!
  • Bring snacks. Healthy snacks are an excellent way to occupy kids and keep them happy. Try pre-cut fruits and vegetables, homemade trail mix, sandwiches, homemade mini muffins, or cheese and crackers.
  • Come prepared with fun conversation starters. Flights and car rides are great time to get to know your family better. Get everyone thinking and share with some fun conversations starters, such as “What’s your first memory?” or “What do you want to do when you grow up?”

What do you do to ensure a happy travels with your kids?
