Five ways to go outside to play with the family for Great Outdoors Month.

As the days get longer, flowers bloom and the weather gets warmer, it’s time to spend more time outside. June is Great Outdoors Month and for good reason. June is a month with nice, comfortable temperatures across most of the United States. And after a long winter, it is time to enjoy the great outdoors as much as possible.

This may require some changing of habits, however. From computers to kitchens to TVs to beds, much of life is typically indoors. To really enjoy your time outside, move away from the ordinary. The following are five ways to get outside with your family:

  • Dine outside. We all need to eat. So why not take one of your meals outside! Whether you bring delicious food out to a grill or pack up some salad and sandwiches in a picnic basket, it’s fun and easy to dine outside. Don’t have a table and chairs? Grab an old blanket and enjoy a seat on the ground.

  • Visit your local parks. After the long winter months, now’s the time to rediscover your neighborhood parks. Set a goal to visit your nearby parks 1, 2 or even 7 times per week. See how many different parks you can visit before the end of the month.

  • Do homework outside. At the beginning of the school year, you likely set up a great study spot for the kids — extra pencils, good lighting, quiet setting. Now, take those same requirements, set up a fun study spot outside! Once you set it up, you may also want to join the fun; bring a favorite book or some unfinished work to complete outside.

  • Take a walk after dinner. Now that daylight hours are longer, that post dinner loll is a great time to step outside for a short walk. Schedule a 15 walk around the block with the family after dinner each day. You can even make a game out of it. While you walk, play a round of I Spy or don’t step on the a line. You’ll enjoy exploring the neighborhood, chatting, getting some much needed exercise, and the great outdoors!

  • Plan a camping trip. June is a great month to pack up your tent and sleeping back and explore nearby campgrounds. If you aren’t able to get away or don’t think the family is ready to be so far from your home amenities, why not make it a backyard campout? Put up a tent (or build one), layout your sleeping bag (or old blankets) and sleep under the stars!

How do you bring every day life out into the great outdoors?
