Playworks Celebrates 30 Years of Play

  1. Updates

What began as a way to make recess more joyful on one playground has grown into a nationwide effort to make play part of every kid’s day.

In 1995, Jill Vialet sat across from a principal who arrived late to their meeting with three

fifth-grade boys in tow. It was their third trip to the office that week for fighting on the playground. “These aren’t bad kids,” the principal explained, “they’re just using their energy unwisely at recess.” Then she posed a question that sparked a movement:

“What I really need help with is recess. Can you do anything about that?”

Jill took the challenge and Playworks was created.

Today, millions of children have discovered the power of play because one principal dared to ask a new question and, for 30 years, Playworks has answered it.

Playworks has partnered with schools and communities to ensure every child has the chance to experience the power of safe and healthy play. Together, we have made a lasting difference in communities across the country. From those first games on playgrounds, Playworks has grown into a national leader in play-based learning and youth development. Along the way, we’ve:

  • Reached 5.3 million students through play

  • Served with 6,021 schools & partner organizations nationwide

  • Brought 89,412 Junior Coaches meaningful leadership opportunities on the playground

  • Launched Playworks PRO to train educators and staff, reaching hundreds of partners

  • Piloted TeamUp, helping schools build sustainable recess programs with on-site support.

  • Set a Guinness World Record for the largest game of Red Light, Green Light

Throughout those 30 years, one thing has never changed: our belief that play matters. Play sparks joy, builds friendships, and teaches lifelong skills like teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving.

Now we are looking ahead. The next chapter is about reaching every child, everywhere, through digital tools like SparkPlay that put play in the hands of every educator, programs like TagTeam that empower community organizations to bring play to more kids, and innovative partnerships that extend play into the lives of both children and adults, even beyond the playground.

But the heart of our work remains the same – to ensure every child has the chance to experience the power of safe and healthy play.

You can help us get there.
