Introducing the Playworks Facilitator Playbook

  1. Updates

The newly released Playworks Facilitator Playbook is a library of ready-to-use lesson plans that help staff confidently lead games that keep kids active and learning through play, and is accessible through the Playworks digital platform, SparkPlay.

Each lesson plan provides clear objectives, step-by-step facilitation guidance, age-appropriate modifications, and built-in transitions so any adult can successfully lead play time, regardless of experience level.

Why It Matters

Unorganized play without guidance can lead to conflict, exclusion, and disengagement. The Facilitator Playbook gives school, out-of-school time, and camp staff the tools to intentionally design play that:

  • Keeps kids moving and minimizes downtime
  • Teaches cooperation, fairness, and problem-solving
  • Creates predictable routines that reduce behavior challenges
  • Helps every child join in, and rejoin, play successfully

The result is safer and more joyful play spaces where kids thrive, and staff feel prepared.

Each lesson includes:

  • Focus & Objectives: Clear skill-building goals (ex. joining games, taking turns, teamwork)
  • Game Flow: Icebreakers, main games, transitions, and wrap-up activities
  • Facilitator Language: What to say and model at each step
  • Materials List: Simple, low-cost equipment
  • Modifications: Adaptations for age and ability levels
  • Reflection Prompts: Quick debrief questions to reinforce learning

Designed for You

The Facilitator Playbook is built for the environments where kids play every day:

  • Out-of-School Time Programs: After-school programs, summer camps, days off/schools out programs
  • Schools: Recess, classroom brain breaks

Lessons require minimal setup and use common equipment like cones, chalk, or playground markings.

Benefits

With the Facilitator Playbook, your team can:

  • Increase youth engagement and participation
  • Build staff confidence and consistency
  • Reduce conflicts and behavior challenges
  • Create joyful play environments for all kids
