We’ve created this list of ideas for commonly used game modifications to help accommodate different spaces, ages, equipment available, and more.
- Increase or decrease the size of the playspace.
- To maintain appropriately-sized groups, create multiple play areas to accommodate for games that have high interest.
- Have students move in different ways to slow down the game or manage the level of difficulty:
- Firefeet (walking quickly on tiptoes)
- Giant steps
- Heel-to-toe walking
- Slow motion
- Elbow-to-knee walking
- Backwards
- Shuffle
- Skip
- Hop
- Bear crawl
- Have students partner up and play Ro Sham Bo to create teams – winners move to one side and their partner moves to the other.
- Replace specific equipment with common objects in the classroom/at home:
- Balls – balled up socks, crumpled paper, stuffed animal or pillow
- Cones – paper plates, markers
- Add or remove time limits.
- Add or remove additional equipment options.
- Incorporate music.
- Have the students try to complete the task silently (using only body language, signals, visuals, etc).
