We’ve created this list of ideas for commonly used game modifications to help accommodate different spaces, ages, equipment available, and more.
  • Increase or decrease the size of the playspace.
  • To maintain appropriately-sized groups, create multiple play areas to accommodate for games that have high interest.
  • Have students move in different ways to slow down the game or manage the level of difficulty:
    • Firefeet (walking quickly on tiptoes)
    • Giant steps
    • Heel-to-toe walking
    • Slow motion
    • Elbow-to-knee walking
    • Backwards
    • Shuffle
    • Skip
    • Hop
    • Bear crawl
  • Have students partner up and play Ro Sham Bo to create teams – winners move to one side and their partner moves to the other.
  • Replace specific equipment with common objects in the classroom/at home:
    • Balls – balled up socks, crumpled paper, stuffed animal or pillow
    • Cones – paper plates, markers
  • Add or remove time limits.
  • Add or remove additional equipment options.
  • Incorporate music.
  • Have the students try to complete the task silently (using only body language, signals, visuals, etc).
