Playworks AmeriCorps member Sean Tate from Abramson Science and Technology Charter School in New Orleans was honored as the 2009 Get in the Game Rookie of the Year at a special diner awards ceremony in San Francisco earlier this year.
In the midst of a serious and stressful post-Katrina mentality, a modular campus with no dedicated recess space and a city-wide evacuation for Hurricane Gustav at the beginning of the school year, Coach Sean created an incredible playground program and began to change attitudes and lives, and to help rebuild community. Sean, a New Orleans native and graduate of Tulane University, was selected by a committee of Playworks staff for this award.
