Recess Matters: Why Belonging, Joy, and Play Are the Hidden Keys to School Attendance

  1. Updates

It started with a familiar moment. A first grader, dressed and ready, stood by the door and asked quietly: “Do I have to go to school today?”

There was no fever. No cough. Just a hesitation rooted in something deeper: discomfort, uncertainty, and disconnection.

It is not uncommon for children to miss school for reasons that are not concrete or visible. Often, what keeps students from showing up is what their day-to-day is like. It’s about how school feels.

At Playworks, we believe increasing attendance begins with this understanding about student experience. It begins with belonging. And belonging often is grounded where many powerful school moments unfold: on the playground.

Leading Playworks is a great privilege. Every day I get to witness the power of play to change how students experience school and themselves. And I get to see the moments when play becomes a lever for culture, connection, and care.

For 30 years, Playworks has partnered with schools to transform recess from chaos to connection. Through trained coaches, educator training, and strategic partnerships, we help schools turn daily play into a catalyst for joy and engagement.

In Title I schools, chronic absenteeism is significantly lower when Playworks is in place.

Students in Playworks schools spend significantly more time in vigorous physical activity at recess, experience measurably fewer incidents of bullying, and return to class more focused and ready to learn. Over 90% of educators report that our programs enable students to feel welcome and develop new relationships with others.

Numbers talk, but they don’t tell the whole story.

We see it in a fourth grader leading a game for the first time.
In a kindergartener who says, “This is the first time I’ve had a friend at recess.”
In a principal who shares, “The tone of our school shifted. Kids started arriving earlier — and more eager to learn.”

That’s what we mean when we say recess matters.

Chronic absenteeism is complex. It’s also shaped by housing, healthcare, and transportation. But inside school walls, the emotional ecosystem matters. And recess reveals what stressors students are carrying — and what they need.

Infusing joy wherever we can during the school day, whether at recess or in the classroom, is not a standalone solution to chronic absence. And we know that more opportunities for joy go a long way towards making school a place that feels fun and safe to be every day.

In our Playworks ‘Recess Matters’ series, you’ll discover how schools are using organized play to build community and a sense of belonging. You’ll hear how tools we’ve developed, like SparkPlay and TagTeam, are scaling impact across diverse communities. And you’ll learn how Playworks is reaching 638,000+ students in 1,400+ schools nationwide, and how we’re working to ensure more students experience joy, play, and connection.
