Alana Artis: Achievement Prep Elementary

“Coach A” comes to Playworks with a background as a camp counselor and substitue teacher- meaning she’s no stranger to the power of play! She enjoys finding new ways for students to get in the game at recess so that every student feels included. She graduated from St. Andrew’s University in May 2017 and enjoys playing basketball when she’s not busy running an awesome program at Achievement Prep Elementary.


Kiki Butler: Payne Elementary

“Coach B” is bringing her experience as a mentor and camp counselor to Playworks DC as an AmeriCorps coach! Her thoughtful approach to facilitation and leadership reflect her favorite Playworks core value, respect, throughout everything she does. When she’s not playing Everybody’s It Tag, you can find her cheering on her favorite team, the Washington Redskins.


Erica Carter: Langley Elementary

“Coach Happy” comes to Playworks DC with a wealth of youth development experience- she even served as a coach for Playworks when it was known as Sports4Kids! She loves bringing her school community together around play and is especially great at partnering with school staff and parents to create a positive school climate. Along with being a recess rockstar, Coach Happy is also a DJ!


Emily Goldhammer: Bancroft Elementary

“Coach Em,” a Williamsburg, VA native, is excited to be returning as a second year AmeriCorps member with Playworks. Formerly an adaptive swim instructor, she enjoys helping children find confidence through physical activity and play. She excels at using play to develop a healthy recess community at her school and beyond. After Playworks, Coach Em hopes to work in a team-focused sports-based youth development field with an emphasis on resources/opportunities for underprivileged children.


Kenny Duff: Brightwood Education Campus

“Coach Duff” is an expert at helping kids come out of their comfort zones at recess and in general. His experience as a youth rehabilitation representative and therapeutic counselor shows in his compassion and commitment to spreading the core value of respect throughout his school community. Not only is Coach Duff a recess rockstar, he’s also a blackbelt in Tang Soo Do Moo Da Kwan!


Michael Johnson: Raymond Education Campus

“Coach Mike” brings his passion for sports and youth development to everything he does with Playworks DC. Formerly a substitute PE teacher in Montgomery County Public Schools, he focused on establishing two-way, student-focused communication that empowered his students to enjoy the learning process. Michael graduated from North Carolina A&T University in 2012 with a degree in Sports Science and Sports Management.


Randy Johnson: Leckie Education Campus

“Coach J” is excited to be an AmeriCorps coach with Playworks this year!  He’s passionate about honing his skills as a facilitator to create a great recess environment at his school. His experience working at an elementary school before this year allows him to figure out great ways to partner with school staff in coming up with innovations and solutions for Playworks programming.


Aaron Smoot: LaSalle Backus Education Campus

“Coach Aaron” can’t wait to rock it out at recess this year!  Originally from Bowie, MD, Aaron has experience serving youth as a tutor and camp counselor. He loves building healthy community through team based recess games like basketball.  His favorite place in DC is Gallery Place where he can watch his favorite team, the Orlando Magic, take on the local Washington Wizards.
