Jill Vialet

CEO and Founder
Playworks

CEO and Founder Jill Vialet has worked for more than 20 years in the nonprofit sector, during which she focused her entrepreneurial skills on conceiving of and growing two successful nonprofit organizations, Playworks and MOCHA (Museum of Children's Art in Oakland). Jill is a proud graduate of public schools and Harvard University.

Amanda Casey

Chief Financial Officer
Playworks

Amanda joined Playworks after 17 years of controllership and financial reporting roles with three high-growth publicly-traded companies as well as five years of audit and public accounting in the San Francisco Bay Area. Amanda graduated from a public high school in Richmond, California and attended U.C. Berkeley. Amanda is excited to bring play to more schools and more children across the United States.

Elizabeth Cushing

President and Chief Operating Officer
Playworks

President and Chief Operating Officer Elizabeth Cushing brings 20 years of nonprofit management experience with organizations focused on youth development, children's advocacy and women's issues to Playworks. Elizabeth is responsible for creating, communicating, and sustaining our strategic development, communications and training initiatives, as well as managing major foundation relationships and contributing to expansion strategy. Elizabeth is a product of Oregon public schools, Stanford University and the Coro Fellows Program in Public Affairs.

David Dial

Regional Executive Officer
Playworks

Regional Executive Officer David Dial has over 20 years of experience as a senior leader in nonprofits. David was the founding executive director for Zeum, San Francisco's hands-on multimedia arts and technology experience for kids. He served on senior management teams during the launching of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center. When David is not busy overseeing school programs in cities across the country, he enjoys playing badminton, table tennis or throwing a frisbee with his family.

Eunice Dunham

Regional Executive Officer
Playworks

Regional Executive Officer Eunice Dunham moved to Boston to launch Playworks' program there after four years on the staff as a site coordinator and area director in California. Eunice is using the experience of establishing programs in Boston in her new role identifying and cultivating new cities and school districts for Playworks' continued national expansion.

Lisa Frydenlund

Chief People Officer
Playworks

Lisa Frydenlund has worked in human hesources for more than 14 years. She came to Playworks from The Arc of San Francisco, where she was their HR director. Prior to The Arc, Lisa worked for a variety of nonprofit and commercial organizations in the San Francisco area. She is a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication. She also holds a Professional Human Resources certification from the Society of Human Resources Management. Lisa is thankful for our playful culture because it spills over into her other life where she is a mother to her amazing son.

David Gallagher

Chief Program Officer

Chief Program Officer David Gallagher began his career with Playworks as a “coach” in an Oakland elementary school. After years of managing school programs in the Bay Area, he moved onto spearheading Playworks Training, and later transitioned into the role of national program director. As CPO, David and the national program team are responsible for managing our cities and programs, ensuring that quality standards and program operations are consistent and supported across the country. In his spare time, David enjoys coaching a high school soccer team and loves a fierce game of curbside 4-square.

Marcy Michael

Director of Business Development
Playworks

Marcy joined Playworks in 2011 bringing 18 years of senior level management experience in creating and overseeing new business ventures within both nonprofits and for profits. She most recently directed the national roll-out of an online professional development training platform for child care providers. At Playworks Marcy leads a rapidly expanding team of trainers, sales and marketing staff. She also works across the organization to develop best practices in training methodology and curriculum, as well as develop a national marketing and branding strategy.

Richard Ng

Director of IT
Playworks

Director of IT Richard Ng was drawn to Playworks because of its mission and model of structured and meaningful play with children. Born and raised in Oakland, Richard spent many years working with children as a recreation leader. Over the last nine years, he worked as an IT network administrator for Golden Gate Regional Center, a state-funded not-for-profit agency serving the developmentally disabled.

Tracy Williamson

Director of Government Programs
Playworks

Director of Government Programs Tracy Williamson began working with children in a therapeutic program for infants and toddlers. After receiving her JD at Northeastern University, she went on to work on public policy research studies, and most recently spent six years as a contracts attorney in the private sector. Tracy is very excited to return to working for a non-profit focused on improving the lives of children.

Armando Zumaya

Armando brings 25 years of experience in fundraising to Playworks. He has worked on both billion dollar major campaigns at Ivy League universities and small organization grassroots fundraising. He is well known to his work helping major donors identify and reach their highest point of impact on issues they care deeply about. He comes to Playworks with a passion to provide our most disadvantaged children with more opportunities for play and physical activity every day. Armando was born and raised in East Los Angeles, graduated from Roosevelt High School and Breed St. Elementary, as well as two degrees from the University of California, Riverside.

Paula Ambrose

Director of National Partnerships
Playworks

Paula is currently serving as the director of national partnerships with Playworks. Prior to joining Playworks, Paula worked for a Fortune 100 information technology company bringing more than 20 years private sector experience to her current role. While there she held roles in functions and lines of business such as Global Social Responsibility, Marketing & Brand Awareness, Field Sales & Support Services, Organization & Leadership Development and Human Resource Management.
 
As part of her commitment to community service Paula volunteers her time in support of youth development, social action projects and improving the economic standing of underserved women.

Melissa Bruno

Data Coordinator
Playworks

Melissa began with Playworks in 2006 as an AmeriCorps member. She then worked as a Program Coordinator for three additional years in the East Bay, CA.  She is thrilled to broaden her role as an advocate for children and bring the power of play to as many people possible. She is grateful to be surrounded by wonderful, like-minded people that make every day fun and exciting.  In her free time Melissa enjoys bowling, cooking, music, tending to her chickens, and playing!!!

Laryssa Calhoun

Account Manager - Boston

Laryssa brings a strong sales background and entrepreneurial spirit to Playworks. After a successful tenure in the corporate world, Laryssa still felt the strong desire to give back and “make a difference”. As a parent of two amazing boys, one being special needs; inclusion and having a healthy and active lifestyle has always been paramount to her. Playworks allows her to indulge in all her passions: children, health and fitness, and making a difference personally.

Jennette Claassen

Director of Evaluation
Playworks

Jennette comes to Playworks with more than twelve years of work experience with social service agencies, both domestically and internationally. Her roles have included direct service provider to children and youth, advisor in the organizational development of a small non-profit, planning administrator, and data administrator. Her significant data management and analysis experience comes from her recent work with First Five Contra Costa County, as well as experience gained while working on her Master of Social Welfare degree (MSW). Her favorite playground game is Knockout.

Kyle DeRoos

Senior Salesforce Administrator
Playworks

Salesforce Administrator Kyle DeRoos spent five exciting as a program coordinator and program manager in Oakland and the Silicon Valley before trading in his whistle and kickball for a mouse and keyboard in the national office. Since moving indoors, Kyle spent two years on the development team before transitioning to focus on administering our data management system, Salesforce.com. After ten years with the organization, Kyle is still amazed at the impact Playworks can have on students who often slip between the cracks of traditional school programming. And he's super good at traveling baseball.

Eben Dower

Playworks Trainer

Eben Dower is excited to begin a new chapter with Playworks as the Bay Area Trainer.  After two years as a Program Coordinator and two as the National Recruiter, Eben is looking forward to combining his programmatic expertise and passion for introducing new folks to the power of play in this new role. He can't wait to get started with the rock star, close-knit team that is Playworks Training.  Also, he loves chocolate.

James "Jamie" Firmage

Senior Account Manager
Playworks

James "Jamie" Firmage started his career in Sales and Marketing with a job as a day camp director and now after a 20+ year career at the director level in sales and marketing, has come full circle at Playworks. Jamie joined Playworks from Vivo Girls Sports, a social networking start-up, in a sales consulting role for the rapidly expanding Playworks Training department and has now joined the team full-time the as the national senior account manager. His past experience includes selling online, including social media and offline direct mail and marketing services into financial services, nonprofit, high-tech and advertising industries.

Brenda Franklin

Government Grants Manager
Playworks

Government Grants Manager Brenda Franklin identifies and secures government funding for Playworks. Prior to coming to Playworks, Brenda worked on program evaluations for federal grants and non profit organizations focused on improving the lives of children. She sees play as the business of childhood, and feels fortunate to help bring healthy play to the nation’s children.
 

Dave Gilmore

Director of Program Operations
Playworks

Dave Gilmore worked as a program coordinator in Playworks' Baltimore launch year, then left to work as a middle school special education teacher in Queens, NY. Dave returned from the his experiences in the classroom in 2007 to serve as Playworks Baltimore's executive director. After two and a half years in that position, Dave joined the national staff as director of program operations in August, 2009. He currently supports Playworks through organizing the flow of communication and supplies between the Playworks national and city offices. A native of Baltimore, Dave is based in the Playworks Baltimore office and has also worked out of the national office in Oakland.

Simone Gonder

Accounts Payable Specialist
Playworks

Simone Gonder comes to Playworks with an extensive background in finance/accounts payable, which includes 11 years in the nonprofit industry. She loves working with numbers and feels that working in Finance is an easy fit for her. She is a native of Oakland, an avid Oakland Raiders fan, and she enjoys participating in competitive games/selective sports activities such as bowling and billiards. Some of her favorite childhood games in school were volleyball, softball, dodgeball, kickball and soccer. One of her favorite things to do is 'laugh' and she enjoys having a natural sense of humor and being around others that spread the cheer.

Beth Jersey

Payroll Manager
Playworks

Payroll Contracts Administrator Beth Jersey is responsible for payroll at Playworks. She has the distinct pleasure of making the entire staff happy at least twice a month. She brings more than 20 years of payroll and accounting experience, much of it in the corporate world, and is happy to now work with an organization that makes a difference in children's lives. When she's not working, you can find her in her garden, taking long walks, reading mysteries or crossword puzzling.

Beth Kimberly

Social Media Manager
Playworks

Social Media Manager Beth Kimberly, began her Playworks career as a program coordinator. She learned a lot about the power of play at schools in Silicon Valley, San Francisco and Oakland. Beth later became a program manager in the East Bay then San Francisco, and is now responsible for leading Playworks' efforts to build an online movement to support the power of play. She enjoys using play to empower children and adults to love learning both in person and online. Beth loves to get outdoors and play both on the playground and in nature.

Cheryl Lewis

Human Resources Administrator
Playworks

Cheryl Lewis joined Playworks as human resources associate in the summer of 2009. Prior to Playworks, she was worked as the employment and training specialist at San Francisco International Airport. She has also managed internship programs and job placement for foster care youth and other youth in San Mateo and San Francisco counties. At Playworks, Cheryl supports hiring and other HR efforts to improve education through safe and interactive play. Cheryl's passion is volleyball, including two seasons as head coach for South San Francisco High School's volleyball program.

Dana Logsden

California AmeriCorps Program Manager
Playworks

California AmeriCorps Program Manager Dana Logsden grew up in the prairies, cornfields and college towns of Iowa.  Dana joined Playworks after two years serving as an AmeriCorps member with Habitat for Humanity. Dana is inspired by her playful coworkers. She enjoys the the outdoors, traveling, and trying new things.

Dana LoVecchio

Training Program Director
Playworks

In 2002, Dana LoVecchio started her tenure with Playworks in the East Bay, CA as a program corrdinator where she used four square, tag, and kickball to create a safe, invlusive school enviornment for her students. After two years of running on the playground, she became a program manager and supported staff in San Francisco, CA.
 
In 2006 Dana joined Playworks Training and has delivered high quality professional development workshops across the country. As the training program director, creates standards for all of Playworks Training products, oversees the quality of all trainers and trainings, develops Playworks' Training of Trainers program, provides professional development workshops for clients across the country, as well as Playworks staff, designs and organizes breakout sessions for Play On - Playworks' annual national conference - and still finds the time for four square, tag, and kickball.

Isabel R. Maze

Staff Accountant II
Playworks

Accounting Associate Isabel R. Maze has brought her five plus years of accounting experience from the Philippines to work here at Playworks. She is fluent in two languages and also graduated near the top of her class in College. Isabel really enjoys being a part of an organization where positivity and fun are always emphasized and executed. In her spare time she likes playing table tennis, pool and watching basketball.

Rob Norris

IT Associate
Playworks

 Rob Norris, IT Associate jumped ship from nine years in the for-profit world at Amazon.com, where he was system administrator at Alexa Internet.  Rob also worked for four years as Operations Consultant at the Chinese Historical Society of America in San Francisco's Chinatown. When he's not running the support function at Playworks, Rob is an avid cook, brewer (beer) and music aficionado. Rob gets annoyed thinking about how the Patriots lost to the Giants in Super Bowl XLII. His Amazon Green-Cheeked parrot is also another source of annoyance.

Maya Novak

Director of Program Quality
Playworks

Director of Program Quality Maya Novak spent two years as a site coordinator at Whittier Elementary School in Oakland before taking roles as area director, Bay Area program director, and now director of program quality. Maya is always impressed and amazed by the level of dedication of the Playworks staff, as well as their capacity to turn almost anything into a game.

Alex Pratt

Marketing Representative
Playworks

As the marketing representative for Playworks Training, Alex strives to increase access to resources that will help build play into our communities. She is inspired by the artistic, culinary, environmental and entrepreneurial expressions within the Bay Area and around the world, that offer opportunities to re-define persons and people. With a background in sociology, art, adventure and eco-tourism and development, Alex hopes to focus her efforts on institutionalizing playful and positive change.

Her favorite game during office recess is Sepak Takraw, a kick volleyball game taught by a co-worker who recently traveled to Thailand.

Justin "J.Ro" Robinson

Recruiting Manager
Playworks

Recruiting Manager Justin "J.Ro" Robinson worked as a program coordinator for four years at Seneca Center in San Leandro, CA.  J.Ro loves collaborating with his amazing colleagues to spread the word about Playworks through jokes, flattery, pamphlets and pretty much any way possible.  He also enjoys hiking, camping, Modest Mouse, and the occasional bonfire.

Patti Robinson

Human Resources Director
Playworks

As Playworks' Human Resources Director, Patti is responsible for all Employee Relations, Workers Compensation, Compensation and Professional Development.  She also works with the HR Administrator regarding the Human Resources Information Systems and Benefits. She has been in Human Resources for 25+ years and has 15 years experience as a member of multi-industry, multinational executive committees. Patti also been a human resources consultant to several small and non profit organizations. She grew up in San Francisco and graduated from Lowell High School.

Quisqueya Rodriguez

Expansion City Program Director
Playworks

Quisqueya "Qiqi" Rodriguez has served youth and their families through non-profit work for the last 10 years. She was the East Bay executive director for Playworks for the past two years and is now working for the national office as the expansion city program director.  Qiqi works with Playworks start-up cities to support programming and administration and  ensure high program quality operation.  Qiqi was born and raised in Oakland, California. In her free time, she likes to spend time camping with her family camping. She enjoys running, swimming, traveling/exploring unknown places, cooking  and shopping.

Daisy Ruiz

Executive Assistant
Playworks

Daisy Ruiz is a native of Los Angeles. She joined Playworks as a volunteer and helped launch the Spanish language version of the Playworks website, Playworks en Espanol. She enjoys the culture of play that Playworks is trying to spread to schools across the country and likes that the office maintains a fun yet professional vibe. Daisy is currently pursuing her Masters degree in nonprofit management at the University of San Francisco. In her free time she enjoys reading, writing, traveling and watching her Lakers win yet another championship.

Ayanna Rutherford

AmeriCorps Program Manager

Ayanna Rutherford, AmeriCorps Program Manager, comes to Playworks after serving Maricopa Association of Governments through the AmeriCorps programs. In her current position Ayanna is responsible for staffing the regional Advisory Councils, grant writing, and administrative work. Ayanna is eager to help Playworks reach more kids and is excited about the inclusive culture that Playworks breeds within the schools.

Hector Salazar

Account Manager - Bay Area
Playworks

Account manager for Playworks Training, Hector Ramon Salazar, is in his eighth year with the organization.  Providing direct service as an AmeriCorps member, program coordinator and program manager in Oakland, Richmond and San Jose for the previous seven years, Hector has now shifted his focus to the national expansion of Playworks Training.  He received both his bachelor's and master's degree in education from Oakland's Holy Names University. During his time at HNU, he served as a point guard and head assistant coach on the men's basketball team while working as director for the Youth Summer Hoop camp. In his spare time, Hector enjoys playing catch with his son Xavier, coloring with his daughter Nina and participating in some sort of food activity with his wife Anna.

Marco Santos

Finance Manager
Playworks

Finance Manager Marco Santos is responsible for monthly financial and grant reporting, countless hours of spreadsheets and distributing financial news throughout the national and city Playworks' offices. Marco has been with Playworks since March, 2008, joining the team from a landscape design company. In his spare time, Marco coaches baseball, football, basketball and soccer, which he has enjoyed for more than 16 years.  

Nancy Shillis

Director of Grants
Playworks

Director of Grants Nancy Shillis comes to Playworks with 20 years experience as a grantmaker in a number of Bay Area philanthropic institutions, working primarily in the field of youth development. Nancy works with city directors on fund development strategies to grow and sustain their programs. She is thrilled to work for a nonprofit focused on helping kids get a healthy dose of play everyday, having seen first-hand how play has positively impacted her own children’s development.

Melissa Simpson

Volunteer Manager
Playworks

Melissa Simpson is helping Playworks build its opportunities for community involvement through volunteer efforts. Before coming to Playworks Melissa worked with homeless mothers and children in the bay area, volunteered with the Peace Corps in Vanuatu. She has several years of experience working in the non-profit field with volunteers and community. Her favorite playground game is four square which she played with her older sister while growing up.  

Ben Stein

Senior National Trainer
Playworks

Ben Stein hails from the city of Pittsburgh, PA where he spent his time cheering for the Penguins. He joined Playworks in 2005 as a program coordinator in San Francisco where he lived and worked for two years. In 2007, Ben became an program manager, supervising nine schools in East Oakland, where he spent another two years.

Currently, Ben is a trainer for Playworks and develops curriculum for trainings. He has trained adults and other youth workers all across the country to work with kids from pre-kindergarten through high school. In addition, he's provided technical assistance to the staff at many playgrounds around the country. Ben is also responsible for our internal training of our own trainers as well.

In his spare time, he rides his bike and travels the world!

Cindy Wilson

Director of Communications
Playworks

Director of Communications Cindy Wilson has been providing public relations and communications services for more than 20 years, working with public relations agencies, corporations and nonprofit groups. Now sworn to use her powers for good, she is passionate about children's issues and educational equity, and is committed to help build a movement by getting the word out about the role of play in learning. In addition to her work with Playworks, she is active in community and school causes, is the assistant coach of a girls' soccer team and loves two-square.

Deepika Yeldandi

Accounting Manager
Playworks

Deepika Yeldandi joined Playworks in fall, 2009 as accounting manager. She brings with her a background in high tech start-ups as well as with accounting firms. At Playworks she is responsible for maintaining the records to help provide accurate reporting for internal and external audiences and ensuring Playworks follows all GAAP guidelines for nonprofit organizations. Deepika says she enjoys working with Playworks because she feels good about the work she is doing and is encouraged about our impact on tomorrow’s kids. Her favorite playground game is 4-square, followed by ro-sham-bo baseball.
