This is a quick paced, counting game, ideal for any group size.

Goal

Take turns counting and try not to be the one to say “twenty-one!”

Before You Start

  • Form a circle with your group.
  • Explain to the group that mistakes will be made and mistakes should be celebrated.
  • Demonstrate with a few players how to take turns calling numbers
    • Make sure players know that they can choose to say one, two or three numbers on their turn.

Set Up

Have players create a circle and designate a leader to begin play.

How to Play

  • The designated leader begins the game.
  • On each turn a player counts out loud up to three numbers in order, and then passes the turn to the next player in the circle until “twenty-one” is reached. For example:
    • Player One says – “one, two”
    • Player Two says – “three”
    • Player Three says – “four, five, six”
    • Player Four says – “seven”
    • This continues around the circle until a player reaches “twenty-one”
  • If a player has to say “twenty-one,” the rest of the group should celebrate them as they either sit down in their spot, or step back. The next person in the circle then restarts the count.
  • Continue playing until there are two players left.
  • Have the last two players play one round of Rock, Paper, Scissors.  The most successful player gives a high-five and says “Good Job, Nice Try” to the other player, and becomes the leader for the next round.
  • To restart, everyone stands back up or rejoins the circle. The new leader then starts the group off at “one.”

Variations

  • Instead of counting to 21 count to 11 or 7.
  • Have students play on teams and decide as a group which numbers will be said.
