Deadra Hall is holding kids back — literally. Her arms splayed, the assistant principal blocks fifth-graders from entering the crowded playground. She makes them do multiplication tables, count by sixes and even spell a few words before lifting her arms and letting them pass in small groups.

Harlem Globetrotters star Buckets Blakes visited kids at the Nathan Hale School in Roxbury and met Marcus Branch. The fifth grader won an essay contest, sponsored by the Sports4Kids program, which helped set up Blakes’ appearance.
Shrinking budgets and strict academic mandates prompted California schools to cut gym classes and cut back on recess time. Now, an Oakland-based nonprofit is trying to put more focus on fitness.
