Inspiration in Little Rock

Each year, Playworks introduces its program to potential expansion cities through a weeklong “Recess Roll-Out.” Selected schools in the city each get a Playworks coach for the week to demonstrate how the program can impact the students, staff and culture at the school.

This week, we’re in Little Rock, Arkansas. Here is an example of how Playworks made a difference to a child at Stephens Elementary.…

What a wonderful first day! I was welcomed with warmth and good ole Southern hospitality.

Today, a third grader was my inspiration. This student has sickle cell and is scheduled for a blood transfusion tomorrow. His teacher said he has been depressed and detached from recess -- and from school in general. She said he usually tries to figure out a way to stay indoors or sits somewhere alone outside. Students empathize with him and try to support him, but he doesn't respond to them.

Today, however, I didn't meet that student. Instead, the third grader I saw came outside with his class for class game time yelling Lil Rock .. Lil Rock… Lil Rock!,  the chant they learned in morning assembly. We played several games, and this student was going 100 percent. When we played circle dodge ball, he was able to dodge the balls for four or five rotations.

Everyone cheered for him. His smile was so wide that it reflected the sunshine! His teacher was ecstatic.....even concerned for a moment that he was "playing too hard." She prompted him a few times to go easy, but he continued to go "hard." When she saw his bright smile, she stepped back and played with her class. We ended with a huge Lil Rock! cheer and the student went back to his class with nothing but smiles.

At the end of the day, the teacher pulled me aside and said with so much passion and sincerity, "His demeanor was completely different today. I couldn't believe this was the same student! He volunteered to lead our reading session today. That hasn't happened all school year!"

I was truly inspired - almost to tears - and so was his teacher. I may not get to see this young student again before I leave, but I feel GREAT knowing that this child had a wonderful breakthrough during such a dramatic period in his life.

I envision this child bragging to his parent tonight about how he was a champion in dodge ball today. And a superstar amongst his peers.

NIGHTLINE ABC

Hello, I just finished watching your featured story on nightline and it warmed my heart. So many people are so quick to give up on children...then have the nerve to wonder why some end up being "troubled" adults. I just wanted to thank you and this organization for everything. please keep doing what you do.

nice work, kudos to you

I don't have the patience to be a teacher. I wish I did, because I think as a species you are moving us forward towards our evolutionary goals and I wish I could be a part of that.

I have a natural affinity for communicating with machines, so I am a computer programmer. I envy you for your ability to reach the children, and at the same time it makes me very happy that we have people like you among us. I just saw you on Nightline and just wanted to thank you for what you do. I come from a military family and unfortunately my siblings and relatives are in (and have been in) harms way, but they are just the enforcers of an old way of thinking whereas you are moving the human race forward. You are the real heroes.

Thank you!

Great strategy to use in resolving conflict

On April 19, 2010, my class was one of the first classes to be introduced to the 30 minute recess activity. I was very impressed by Coach Billy Popwell and his bubbling personality and his positive attitude.I was impressed by his high energy level.I think that's why we had kindred spirits.

I knew then that Playworks would be a program that I would want to be involved in. The class was engaged and very excited about the activities that the PLAYWORKS coach introduced.

I was all hyped and I found myself hopping around with the students. Before we knew it, it was time for lunch. Instead of the usual chaotic rush to run in line, the students appeared to be fatigued and less interested in who would be first in line. There appeared to be a calmness among the group.

As we reached the entrance into the building, I noticed that a couple of my more challenging students were pushing to get in the middle of the line. Before I could get to the line to resolve the problem, I noticed that there were two students who had decided to use the Sho, Ram, Bo technique that Coach Popwell had taught the class.

So now when the students begin to line up for lunch, recess, or pull-outs,they can rely on one of the many strategies of "PLAYWORKS". If the students continue to incorporate PLAYWORKS in and out of the classroom, the teacher will have less discipline problems. If there is less discipline, there will be a decrease of documentation of misbehavior. Less misbehavior....more teaching.......more teaching.......better scores!!!!

Thanks PLAYWORKS for giving us options that work. Not only am I convinced that PLAYWORKS work, I am empowered and interested in becoming a PLAYWORKS coach.

Not only am I a certified Elementary Education teacher,I am a certified Health, P.E. and Safety Teacher. So, I am so interested in becoming a PLAYWORKS coach.

Life will be so much better with "PLAYWORKS". My advice to my fellow co-workers:"Don't leave the classroom without it".
