School’s Out, Kids Cheer and Parents Pivot

  1. Updates

Staying active during summer months can keep kids from too much screen time.

Incorporating more activity in a child’s day doesn’t have to mean push-ups and jumping jacks. Parents and guardians can use daily tasks as a means to encourage children to be active.

Taking out the trash or walking the dog can get kids off the couch. Start a relay race for cleanup time or have a pre-dinner dance party to shake the sillies out.

Having a few go-to games in your back pocket can take the pressure off moments when kids are restless, plans shift, or nothing seems to be working.

They make family time feel easier because you’re not scrambling for ideas ‘in the moment’. It’s a tool to steady the rough moments – waiting, transitions, breakdowns – and guide the day forward.

Pick a few favorite games you can play anywhere, anytime. Pull one out when you have a few minutes to fill.

These games are quick to set up and fun for everyone.

1. Up Down Stop Go

This is a game of opposites, in which a caller says one command and players do the opposite.

2. Jump the River

Use your imagination and leap across “rivers” that grow wider each round.

3. Mystery Creature

This is a great game to play if you’re lower energy, as it doesn’t require a lot of moving. However, for an added twist, add an acting component to it.

4. Snake

Build jump-rope confidence with a low-stakes activity.

5. Around the World

Travel as far as you can while practicing basketball shots.
