Coach Ona Brings Creativity and Sustainability to the Mendell

Coach Ona with one of her Junior Coaches at the Mendell Elementary School

Coach Myla Ona is a first year Playworks Coach at the Mendell Elementary School in Roxbury. Myla works hard every day to make sure the environment at the Mendell is fun and inclusive for every student.

Myla is a creative and reliable leader, always looking for ways to improve games to include more students! Knowing many kids are visual learners, she creates extra visual content when making lesson plans to ensure everyone in her class feels supported and involved.

Myla keeps the community at the Mendell up to date with the latest Playworks news and highlights by sending home a bi-monthly newsletter to parents. Myla is always looking for ways to lend a hand in her school community. She often helps out with the YMCA programming after school and assisted with the school science fair.

In two weeks, Myla is hosting a community engagement initiative at her school called “Mendell Prepares for Earth Day.”  The event will educate the student body and their families about recycling and the recycling system at their school. Students and families will rotate between games, arts and crafts activities, and education sessions focused on recycling.

We are proud to have a motivated, hard-working coach like Myla representing Playworks in the Boston community. We are confident that she will continue to make excellent happen at the Mendell and beyond for the remainder of the school year.
