Coach Emily Makes Excellent Happen

  1. Updates

Coach Emily is a first-year Jesuit Volunteer Corps program coordinator at the Sumner Elementary School in Roslindale. She is passionate about making a difference in the community and is dedicated to her role as a Playworks Coach. Coach Emily has built an incredible program at the Sumner, ensuring that all of her students feel safe, welcomed, and included throughout the school day. Throughout her year at the Sumner Elementary School, Coach Emily has built an incredible relationship with the school administration and community. She is a critical part of ensuring that all students are able to learn, lead, and thrive in school.

During the month of March, Coach Emily is working hard to secure running scholarships for her students to participate in the annual Playworks Run for Recess. Many of her students are excited about participating in the event, but have expressed to her that they are unable to cover the cost of entry. Coach Emily is taking the initiative to find sponsors for each of her students that wish to run in the race. She is working closely with her mother, who teaches in a school in New York, to have teachers sponsor Sumner students. Currently, she has more than 20 adults sponsoring in the race, with a goal of recruiting many more sponsors. Her students are so excited for the Run for Recess they are practicing for the race by running laps at recess!

Coach Emily continues to make excellent happen at her school by establishing a strong Junior Coach program. Her Junior Coaches are incredible leaders at Sumner, facilitating games at recess and resolving conflicts in and out of the classroom. Coach Emily is taking her Junior Coaches to the Irving Middle School, where the majority of them will attend, to participate in Citizen Schools programming. Her Junior Coaches will engage with current middle school students, giving these middle school students advice and tips on facilitating games with peers. With her incredible dedication and passion for creating a healthy, fun and safe environment for her students, we are confident Coach Emily will continue to make excellent happen throughout Massachusetts.
