Playworks Coaches and Staff Volunteer at the Children’s Book Bank

  1. Updates

Prior to Thanksgiving, Playworks AmeriCorps Coaches and staff convened for an afternoon of giving back to our community by volunteering at the Children’s Book Bank (CBB).

The CBB fills homes with engaging, culturally diverse books because all children deserve to have books of their own. In low-income neighborhoods, the ratio of books to children is one book for every 300 children, far below the ratio of 13 books per child in middle and upper-income neighborhoods. The CBB works with the community to collect and distribute collections of children’s books to families in need so that children grow up as successful readers, learners, and citizens.

Aside from reminiscing through some of our beloved childhood stories, we cleaned books, erased book scribbles, and assembled book bags for distribution.

Inclusion is one of our core values at Playworks, and we loved learning about CBB’s “A Story Like Mine” program, which prioritizes including books with diverse representation in their book bundles to better meet the needs of the children and families they serve in our community. It was a pleasure working together to foster healthy and inclusive communities for the children that we serve!
