Girls’ Basketball season kicks off with University of Portland hosted Extravaganza

Over 80 girls from 14 Playworks schools enjoyed a ‘skills and drills’ extravaganza at Howard Hall Gymnasium at the University of Portland on December 3, 2010. This event marked the largest extravaganza to date in Portland and was highlighted by a visit from the University of Portland Pilots Women’s Varsity Basketball team.

After two hours of learning passing, dribbling, shooting, defense, and teamwork with our 14 Playworks coaches, participants had a special session with members from the Pilots. Head Coach Jim Sollars spoke to participants about the history of women’s basketball, the importance of maintaining a positive attitude, keeping up with academics, and working hard to achieve goals. Next, Coach Sollars led some of his players through a demonstration of skilled shooting, passing, and defense at the collegiate level. The session ended with Pilots’ players Lauren Angel, Cassandra Brown, Nakeisha Brown, Alexis Byrd, and Amy Pupa answering questions, handing out t-shirts, posters, and basketballs, and posing in pictures with the Playworks participants.

The extravaganza brings together the 4/5th grade girl participants in the Playworks Night Court basketball season and gives a great opportunity to meet girls from other teams, all while practicing and playing basketball. Official games begin December 7, and run through the first week in February. Check out the Leagues Schedule section and support your neighborhood schools.
