Playworks Indiana’s February Teacher of the Month

  1. Updates

Playworks Indiana recognizes Sarah Zack, Assistant Principal and Recess Coach at Francis Parker School 56, as its February Teacher of the Month.

Mrs. Zack has been the power behind Playworks at Francis Parker all year. As the Recess Manager, she makes sure that all of her staff are thinking about recess every week. She receives input from her staff about recess to ensure that we are building a program that is sustainable and aligns with the goals the teachers have for their scholars in the classroom.

Why did you decide to be a part of the Recess Team?

I understand the importance of play. Being a part of the Playworks team allows me to keep a pulse of students’ well-being outside of the classroom.

What is your favorite recess game?

We love Kickball and Switch at Francis W. Parker!

Why do you think recess is important?

Social and emotional learning is an important part of our everyday educational experiences. At Francis W. Parker, we grow the whole child. Recess allows our students to move and interact with one another in a fun way, which ultimately helps activate their bodies and brains to prepare them to learn. Recess is a crucial component of our everyday curriculum.

What does having a partnership with Playworks mean to your school?
Our partnership with Playworks has created a positive recess setting for our students. It helps our students who struggle with sportsmanship, making friends, and taking turns. I have enjoyed watching students and teachers play and grow during recess time. We use strategies taught during our class game time in all areas of the building.

What are you most looking forward to at recess this year?
The Playworks staff is incredible! We enjoy having Coach Abby, our Playworks site coordinator, in the building. She is an excellent resource for our teachers. As an administrator, I am pleased to see an increase in play and a decrease in behavioral issues. The Junior Coach Program is also amazing! It gives our students much-needed leadership opportunities. Additionally, I love seeing staff interacting with the students during play time. Playworks has been a great addition to our school community. We are very grateful!
