University of Phoenix volunteers visit Machan Elementary

University of Phoenix financial advisers traded in their briefcases for sneakers and hit the playground at William T. Machan Elementary for a day of Playworks Corporate Recess. The event included a basic training and then a visit to the elementary school to help out at recess.

“One of the most valuable things I got from this was how eager the children were to congratulate one another and how the children had learned to settle disagreements easily and effectively,” said Jovan La Spisa.

In addition to this, Jovan says she was impressed by how easily a child’s spirits could be lifted by a little encouragement. “I was really touched by how happy these kids were spending a little time with us,” Jovan said.

From 4-Square to Sprout-Ball, the volunteers were found circling around the playground, eager to get a dose of every game.

“The Playworks coach did a great job of organizing and running the activities,” said Ryan Quevedo. “You could really see how much they cared about the kids.”

Ryan’s highlights include the opportunity to interact with the kids, seeing the smiles on the kid’s faces and just having the opportunity to give a couple hours of his time.
