{"id":1946,"date":"2018-12-28T15:43:27","date_gmt":"2018-12-28T23:43:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/southern-california\/?p=1946"},"modified":"2019-01-23T10:10:33","modified_gmt":"2019-01-23T18:10:33","slug":"recess-reboot-four-days-to-creating-a-culture-of-positive-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/southern-california\/2018\/12\/28\/recess-reboot-four-days-to-creating-a-culture-of-positive-play\/","title":{"rendered":"Recess Reboot: Four Days to Creating a Culture of Positive Play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes there\u2019s something even better than a \u201cwin-win.\u201d In the case of Playworks\u2019 Recess Reboot at Griffin Avenue Elementary School, it\u2019s more a case of a win-win-<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">win<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the USC Good Neighbors Grant Program, Playworks Instructional Coach Roxana Colmenares visited the school for four days in November to lead a Recess Reboot. Coach Rox taught strategies, games, and systems to model safe and healthy play to the kids and staff at the school located in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, not far from the USC Health Sciences campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to her visit, staff used a system of \u201czones\u201d that each student had to stick to, which made it easier for teacher aides to supervise children. Each zone featured a certain game that was played for an entire week. Roxana says that system led to a lot of unhappy kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I was observing, I\u2019d walk around and ask, \u2018Why are you sitting?&#8217; and they\u2019d be like, \u2018Well, today is kickball.\u2019 And I\u2019d say, \u2018Well, what do you want to play?\u2019 \u2018I want to play handball, but we have to wait because it\u2019s not until two weeks when we get to that station.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Roxana\u2019s four days at Griffin Avenue, she demonstrated how using the Playworks model could create a culture of play where children had choices during recess and wouldn\u2019t need to be restricted to a single game in a single area. It was a big mindset shift for the teacher assistants and other staff members who were used to supervising recess from the sidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe TAs moved to being more active and more engaged with all the kids,\u201d Roxana says. \u201cThey\u2019d tell me, \u2018Oh, I can move around more. I can interact with other kids and not just the ones in my area.\u2019 It\u2019s more of an interactive supervising. \u2018Oh, give me a high five.\u2019 It was changing their mentality of what it looked like when they were outside. By the end, the adults were like, \u2018I had so much fun playing.\u2019 They were laughing, \u2018I\u2019m exhausted, but it\u2019s a good type of exhaustion.\u2019 \u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time ever during the Reboot, the TAs sat together and bonded as a group, planning what games to play and what they needed to modify. They say they\u2019re going to continue to meet on a monthly basis, something they\u2019ve never done before. As for those zones, they\u2019re likely gone for good because the advantages of the Playworks model were clear to all. Children from a special needs class were included in games with the general population of the school, and a group of girls who typically stuck to the sidelines joined in on games. After all, who wouldn\u2019t want to play Hungry Hungry Hippo, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/rock-paper-scissors-relay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RoShamBo Relay<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/switch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Switch<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey had what they called the sitting zone where the girls were able to just sit,\u201d Roxana says. \u201cSo one of the TAs was like, \u2018There\u2019s nobody in the sitting zone. The girls are actually out there playing.\u2019 So again, going back to those options, they were able to pick the game they actually wanted to play during that week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the Reboot, students had graded recess as a \u201cthree\u201d out of five\u2014not terrible but not great, either. Afterward, their rating jumped to a much higher four or 4.5. But for teachers and administrators, one aspect of Recess Reboot got a perfect grade. There wasn\u2019t a single referral to the office for discipline issues during the entire four days Roxana visited.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So about that win-win-<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">win<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Win number one: All kids were included and had fun playing games they were able to choose. Win number two: Positive play translated into zero referrals for discipline.
