Who Are Your Recess Heroes?

Every school has heroes who make recess inclusive, resolve conflicts, and help everyone have fun. Use these tips to help your heroes unlock their superpowers.

Recess Heroes Let Everyone Play

Recess should be fun for everyone, but sometimes, kids feel shy or left out. Recess heroes can:

Invite others to play

If you see someone standing alone, ask if they would like to join your game.

Let anyone join any game

Make it even easier to join games like foursquare by drawing a line where people should stand to wait their turn. Mark the front and the back of the line so people know where to go.

Play games where everyone is “It”

Everyone’s It Tag and Bandaid Tag are two fun games where everyone is it, all the time.

Recess Heroes Say, “Good Job, Nice Try!”

Sometimes, hearing “you’re out!” can feel discouraging. Instead, recess heroes can make it feel exciting to try again. Recess heroes can:

Give lots of high-fives

Try giving a high five when someone goes back to the end of the line. You could even decide that when someone ends their turn, everyone in line gives them a high five!

Say, “Good Job, Nice Try!”

This still lets people know that their turn is over or that they need to do something differently, but it feels more encouraging.

Recess Heroes Rock It Out

Do you ever hear arguments about whose turn it is or who got out? Recess is more fun when conflicts are resolved quickly so everyone can keep playing. Recess heroes can:

Solve small conflicts using ro-sham-bo

Ro-sham-bo is also known as Rock, Paper, Scissors. Learn how to play with these instructions.

Make sure everyone knows how

Teach everyone to play ro-sham-bo with fun group games like Ro-sham-bo Rockstar and Morph.

Recess Heroes Can Be Any Age

You are never too old or to young to be a recess hero. Recess heroes:

Look out for littler kids

Student leaders can help younger students learn games, resolve conflicts, and develop their recess hero super powers. If your school has a Junior Coach program, students can also help manage equipment and more.

Are never too old to play

Recess is all about kids, but did you know that research shows adults are also important at recess? Adults with recess duty can give high fives, play a few rounds of a game, and teach students to use their recess superpowers for good.
