I observed that she stuck with her \u201cbest friends\u201d not really engaging with the general student body. Weeks later, I asked her if she would be interested in playing on my kickball team.<\/p>\n<p>With the largest SMILE she said, \u201cYes, Coach, I would love to!\u201d\u00a0But then immediately sunk down and said \u201cI do not know how and I am not going to be good at it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"media-element file-media-original\" style=\"width: 240px; height: 240px; margin: 10px; float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2017\/09\/IMG_5484.png\" width=\"220\" height=\"220\" data-original=\"{&quot;fid&quot;:&quot;4967&quot;,&quot;view_mode&quot;:&quot;media_original&quot;,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;media&quot;,&quot;attributes&quot;:{&quot;height&quot;:220,&quot;width&quot;:220,&quot;style&quot;:&quot;width: 240px; height: 240px; margin: 10px; float: right;&quot;,&quot;class&quot;:&quot;media-element file-media-original&quot;}}\" \/>\u00a0\u201cLets not worry about if you are good or bad, and lets focus on learning how to play!\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>She was very excited that I was willing to teach her.\u00a0 Initially I asked her to join me at recess,\u00a0my students play everyday. However,\u00a0the competitive nature and the larger students that play intimidated her. It was not until after we had our league practices that she felt a little more comfortable to play. She only played at recess for a few days before returning to her group of friends. Though she did not stick with kickball that week, I give her kudos for stepping outside of her comfort zone.<\/p>\n<p>The BIG day finally came, our kickball jamboree. Kayla was literally sick to her stomach and did not feel she was ready to play.<\/p>\n<p>I purposely assigned her with the first kick of the day, telling her \u201cour team is counting on you to start the day off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nervous and all, Kayla kicked that ball and made it to 1<sup>st<\/sup> base safely. \u00a0With her mom andgGrandmother were on the sideline cheering for her, Kayla was brimming with excitement!<\/p>\n<p>As the games continued, Kayla showed a side of herself that I have never seen.
