Next up &#8211; Cheers, claps, calls &amp; responses, and cooldowns!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These attention-getters make managing groups easier. Whether it\u2019s in the classroom, walking down the hallways, during transitions between activities, or coming in and out of recess, these quick and fun tips help get and keep kids focused.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"hr--left\" \/>\n<h3><b>Call &amp; Response<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people are familiar with a call and response, where a teacher gives a prompt (the \u201ccall\u201d) and students respond in unison with a specific reply. Here are a few that involve a combination of words and movements to ensure eyes and ears are on you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Match me<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 have everyone do the same action as yourself. Ex. touch your nose, touch your shoulders, clasp your hands.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you hear my voice\u2026<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 follow this statement with an action, such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clap twice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhythm clap \u2013 clap in a rhythm and have the kids repeat that same rhythm.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I say __, you say __<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 use any two words, such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I say recess, you say rocks. Recess, rocks!<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alligator, Alligator, Chomp, Chomp<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 you say<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alligator, alligator<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the students call back <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chomp, chomp <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while making a chomping motion with their arms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All set? You bet <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 you say <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all set?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and students call back <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you bet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a class=\"button button--small\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=78eiLtQjmss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch a demo here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"hr--left\" \/>\n<h3><b>Cheers\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cheers are a fun way to capture attention and build positivity and community. A clap (on the count of three), 2. an action, and 3. a sound. Here are some examples:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fireworks Clap: As with all claps, this begins by counting to three, and when the leader says three, everyone claps once in unison, then moves their hands in the motion of their favorite firework and makes the pop, pop, shhhhh sound of fireworks.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rollercoaster Clap: this clap begins with hands are up in front as if sitting on a rollercoaster. When the leader says three, everyone claps once then moves up three times making a \u201cchh\u201d sound, as the rollercoaster climbs the hill. At the top of the hill, hands are in the air, everyone says \u201cwhoo\u201d and mimics three little hills that follow, before closing with a final clap in unison.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whoosh Clap: this clap begins with everyone rubbing their hands together, building up warmth and positivity. When the leader counts to three, everyone sends their hands out and pushes that positive energy forward, saying \u201cwhoooosh\u201d in unison.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a class=\"button button--small\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLitu40RVByyyRjErhJLdH1YxyrtIUjYxI\">Find more claps here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"hr--left\" \/>\n<h3><b>Cooldowns\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathing exercises can be helpful to cool the body back down after an exciting game, diffuse tension after a conflict, or just recharge and refocus.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five Finger Breathing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold one hand out in front of you with your fingers spread apart. With your pointer finger from the other hand, start at the base of your thumb and trace along the edge of your hand. Inhale as your finger traces upward, and exhale as your finger traces down between fingers.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3555 size-full\" style=\"margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-york-new-jersey\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2025\/09\/5FingerGif.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" \/><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volcano breaths: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start by putting your hands together, and sending them straight up like lava flowing up a volcano.
