As children re-entered school buildings, people quickly realized that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/news\/leveraging-play-to-address-learning-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">academic recovery from learning loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and recovery from social isolation go hand in hand. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/24\/us\/math-reading-scores-pandemic.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">math scores fell in every state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so too did students\u2019 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/parenting\/mental-health\/managing-long-term-effects-pandemic-your-childs-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skill development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with typical social and physical skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to mental health, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-health-strengthening-our-response\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains, \u201cThroughout our lives, multiple individual, social and structural determinants may combine to protect or undermine our mental health\u2026 Risks that occur during developmentally sensitive periods, especially early childhood, are particularly detrimental\u2026 Protective factors serve to strengthen resilience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyschools\/protective_factors_schools.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC), \u201cprotective factors are individual or environmental characteristics or conditions that promote the health and emotional well-being of children and adolescents.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic negatively impacted children\u2019s sense of safety and belonging, essentially eliminating the protective factors previously available to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to acknowledge the loneliness and isolation that millions are experiencing and the grave consequences for our mental health, physical health and collective well-being,\u201d United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy said in a recent article titled \u201cHow Can We Bring an End to the \u2018Epidemic of Loneliness\u2019?\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/08\/learning\/how-can-we-bring-an-end-to-the-epidemic-of-loneliness.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">source<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protective factors can mitigate the effects of risks such as isolation, inactivity, bullying, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Cultivating a culture of connection<\/b><b> and physical activity are important protective factors<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the pandemic, daily routines that encouraged social connection and physical activity were disrupted. A large percentage of the population lack adequate social connection, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/surgeongeneral\/priorities\/connection\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Surgeon General\u2019s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLoneliness and isolation hurt whole communities. Social disconnection is associated with reduced productivity in the workplace, worse performance in school, and diminished civic engagement. Given these extraordinary costs, rebuilding social connection must be a top public health priority for our nation. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/00333549231175458\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">source<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alison Vaux-Bjerke is currently a Physical Activity Advisor at the United States Department of Health and Human Services and was formerly a Playworks Coach.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said, \u201cPhysically active play can have immediate benefits for mental health for adults (reduced anxiety) and long term benefits for people of all ages (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/our-work\/nutrition-physical-activity\/physical-activity-guidelines\/current-guidelines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduced depression for all ages and anxiety for adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). And play can take many forms from a race to the mailbox to a game of basketball. However you can fit physical activity into your day, the benefits will show up. And there is an incredibly broad base of research to support this \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-02\/PAG_MYW_FactSheet_Kids_508c2.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical activity can reduce the risk of depression in kids ages 6-13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Vaux-Bjerke said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to combat the epidemic of loneliness, the Surgeon General suggests three key priorities as a part of his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/surgeongeneral\/priorities\/connection\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Connection Framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One of these priorities is investing in social infrastructure:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe must strengthen social infrastructure \u2014 the programs, policies, and structures that aid the development of healthy relationships. The reach and presence Playworks has had across the country over the past 27 years shows that it can be replicated in many places and spaces. The emphasis on leveling the playing field through play; engaging parents, teachers, and community members through volunteerism; and emphasizing fun and respect represent an example of the power of play in strengthening social infrastructure within communities,\u201d said Vaux-Bjerke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playworks partners with schools to increase the physical activity of kids and create a sense of connection and belonging. Many of the outcomes from our programming strengthen additional protective factors associated with supporting youth mental health and wellness including but not limited to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relationships\/connections with peers and adults<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conflict resolution skills and cooperation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resilience<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Positive communication<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does it work? The power is in its simplicity. Alison has seen that firsthand, back when she was a Coach on Playworks playgrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was not assigned my own school as a Coach, but got to rotate through the different sites and support my peers. I was placed at one school for an extended period due to the other Coach being injured, so I got to be more hands on in coaching the co-ed volleyball team. The kids were so into it that they would want to practice at recess and I would tell them their volleys were, \u201cBeautiful! Beautiful!\u201d I was moved to a different site at some point during the season and on the way to our game site one day, I heard from across the road, \u201cBeautiful!
