Consider these steps as you map at your playground:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider the popular and common activities at your school\u2019s recess, such as soccer, jump rope, or basketball. Prioritize space for these games so your students will be engaged and playing at recess!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take a look at your space, noting any off limits areas (driveways, woods, stairwells), as well as any fixed elements, like basketball hoops or foursquare courts. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you begin to manage and organize your recess equipment:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When selecting equipment for your school\u2019s recess, think about what games your students commonly play, and take any fixed equipment into account. Do you have a basketball hoop? Is there a four-square court? If so, select equipment to support those options.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aim for the right amount of equipment at recess so there\u2019s enough to support a variety of popular or common games at your recess but not so much that equipment is getting lost.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When meeting with your recess teams, make sure to think through <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #438bc5;\"><a style=\"color: #438bc5;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.recesslab.org\/resources\/manage-organize-recess-equipment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">equipment systems<\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which help you keep track of equipment and minimize lost or mistreated equipment. Identify the following: Where is the equipment stored? Who brings the equipment out to recess? Who brings the equipment back after recess is over? Keep these things in mind as you brainstorm what your recess routines will look like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An intentional (but short!) opening is key for reminding students of <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #438bc5;\"><a style=\"color: #438bc5;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.recesslab.org\/resources\/set-simple-recess-guidelines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recess expectations<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, communicating what games are available that day, and any other important announcements. Try out an <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #438bc5;\"><a style=\"color: #438bc5;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=78eiLtQjmss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attention getter<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the beginning!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recess closing is important to help students transition back into the school building. Do a cool down activity, like a <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #438bc5;\"><a style=\"color: #438bc5;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/10-creative-cooldown-breathing-activities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breathing exercise<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or stretch, to help students calm down and prepare to go back to class.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you find yourself with extra transition time in line at the end of recess, keep the fun going! Games like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yFIU0A1dhVY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #438bc5;\">The Big Cheese<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/up-down-stop-go\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #438bc5;\">Up, Down, Stop, Go<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be played while students are in line.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When creating recess routines, take a look at your recess schedule to identify how transitional routines will best fit in your day. Are the students being released from their classrooms or from the lunchroom? Do teachers staff recess, or do they hand the students off to separate recess team? How does equipment cleanup or grabbing lunch bags fit into your routine? And most importantly, how will you communicate the recess transition routines to staff and students?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #054f95;\"><strong>With a well-planned, organized, and engaging playground, recess is a time that students will be able to practice valuable skills, release their energy (making it easier to focus during academic learning time), and connect with their peers.
