Regardless of if it\u2019s before, during, or after a game, these tips will help alleviate negative feelings and create a healthy play space where every kid feels safe to make mistakes and just have fun!<\/p>\n<p><b>Before the Game:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBe Respectful&#8221; is often a school\/organizational expectation. Define respect as being just as kind to yourself as you are to others. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure kids know what respect means as it relates to being a \u201cgood sport.\u201d A \u201cgood sport\u201d is someone who exhibits good sporting behavior like politeness, positivity, courage, perseverance, and respect for their teammates and opponents. Ask for words or phrases they might use to encourage someone who is feeling upset after they lost or got out of a game.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicate to kids that no matter if they win or lose, positive self-talk can help them feel good and overcome a loss. Check out our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/2021\/10\/14\/teaching-positive-language-on-the-playground\/-language-on-the-playground\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">tips and tricks for teaching positive language<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the playground, and try teaching the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/the-maze-game\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maze Game<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a way to practice positive self-talk!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have everyone practice \u201cbrushing off the losses\u201d from their shoulders before the game begins. Alternatively, teach students to take a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/10-creative-cooldown-breathing-activities\/balloon-breath\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Balloon Breath<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if they lose and are feeling overwhelmed or angry as a way to calm down.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remind kids before they play a game: they might lose or they might win, but what matters is they are active and having fun.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>During the Game:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Model what being a \u201cgood winner\u201d and \u201cgood loser\u201d looks like. Adults should exemplify positive behavior by giving high fives, telling students \u201cGood job, nice try\u201d after being less successful, and modeling other displays of good sporting behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build lots of high fives, fist bumps, or foot fives into the rules. For example: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a students gets out during a game of<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/foursquare\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four Square<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the other players must high five the the person who got out before they get into line. Or, w<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hile playing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/penalty-kick-soccer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Penalty Kick Soccer<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the goalie and kicker must high-five when they switch, regardless of who was more successful.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>After the Game<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid any language akin to \u201cit\u2019s just a game.\u201d It\u2019s important to name and acknowledge what a kid is feeling when they lose because that game feels very important to them. If a student is having a hard time after losing a game, try asking them a few reflection questions: What did they learn from the game they just played? What might they do differently next time? What\u2019s something the student is really good at? Did they excel in that skill by practicing? What are skills used in this game that we could practice at recess?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emphasize that it&#8217;s our responsibility as part of a community to celebrate others and help them succeed no matter the context. The adult can model high-fiving each student and encourage them to high five another student who also played the game.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give time for students to give shoutouts or &#8220;appreciations&#8221; to someone on the other team who they saw playing hard or being a great sport.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These tips can be applied across all games and activities, but another thing to consider is teaching games that encourage collaboration, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/key-punch\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Key Punch<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/resource\/game-of-the-week-toxic-waste-dump\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Toxic Waste Dump<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where there is no \u201cwinning\u201d or \u201closing\u201d team.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: #438bc5;\">Play is a great way to build communication skills, learn how to regulate emotions, and foster connections within a community.
