What does it sound like? How does it feel? There are ways to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/resource\/designing-inclusive-recess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> design your playground <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to encourage every kid to play, and there are actionable steps and activities to design those spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #438bc5;\"><b>Learn every student\u2019s name, how to pronounce it.<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A student\u2019s name is at the core of their identity. Calling a student by name shows them that you see them and care, and encouraging students to learn each other\u2019s names is the first step in creating an environment where every student feels like they belong. We know that learning names is hard, especially with lots of new friends on the playground. Try out the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/movement-name-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Movement Name Game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a fun twist on introductions with any age group, or a fast-paced tag style game, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/name-touch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Name Touch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with older students.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #438bc5;\"><b>Play \u201cget to know you games\u201d, especially at the beginning of the year. <\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving students the opportunity to talk about themselves and learn more about their classmates will naturally spark further conversation and connection that will only continue to grow throughout the year.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/i-love-my-neighbor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I Love My Neighbor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be played with a variety of modifications for physical ability and space available, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/run-if\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Run If<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a great option for younger grades.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #438bc5;\"><b>Modify games so that every person on the playground feels welcome. <\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every student is different and has varying ability levels, so creating modifications to celebrate the various skillsets is crucial to ensure every kid gets to play. For example, adding an auditory component to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/giants-wizards-elves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Giants, Wizards, and Elves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will allow students with visual impairments to still participate in and enjoy the game.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h3><span style=\"color: #438bc5;\"><b>Reframe what it means to be \u201cout.\u201d<\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When students are tagged \u201cout\u201d of a game, many lose interest or no longer feel welcome. With tag games such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/sharks-and-minnows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharks and Minnows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, promote a role switch if they are tagged, such as becoming \u201cseaweed\u201d or another shark rather than sitting out. In games where students must exit the game and wait in a line such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/switch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Switch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/foursquare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4-Square<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, give students a new \u201cjob\u201d while waiting in line such as \u201cWorld\u2019s Most Enthusiastic Cheerer\u201d or \u201cHigh-5 Giver,\u201d thus promoting students feeling invested in the game.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #438bc5;\"><b>Use unique grouping techniques. <\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than having team captains pick basketball or kickball teams, have students sound off as \u201capples\u201d and \u201coranges\u201d and split teams as such, or group based on birth month (\u201cIf your birthday is January through June, you\u2019re on the left side of the field! July through December, you\u2019re on the right!\u201d) With larger groups, splitting them with unique terms such as Team Lions, Team Tigers, Team Bears, and Team Oh My promotes silliness and randomly splits students, and games such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/three-lines-basketball\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3-Line Basketball<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/three-lines-soccer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3-Lines Soccer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> similarly encourages kids to play with someone new through the constant randomization of teams.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><b><span style=\"color: #438bc5;\">Know that you don\u2019t have to be an expert!<\/span> <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk to caregivers, teachers, parents, and students themselves about how they think games and recess can be more engaging. Or, invite students to get imaginative and creative and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/game-library\/invent-a-game\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invent a Game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with clear rules, boundaries, and objectives, with a focus on promoting play for all students.
