{"id":5056,"date":"2021-05-24T14:26:56","date_gmt":"2021-05-24T18:26:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/?p=5056"},"modified":"2021-05-24T14:35:22","modified_gmt":"2021-05-24T18:35:22","slug":"recess-rocks-in-ri-prioritizes-rhode-island-students-health-and-well-being-throughout-covid-19-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/2021\/05\/24\/recess-rocks-in-ri-prioritizes-rhode-island-students-health-and-well-being-throughout-covid-19-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Recess Rocks in RI prioritizes Rhode Island students\u2019 health and well-being throughout COVID-19 crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recess Champions program recognizes educators who have made play a priority\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recess Rocks in Rhode Island, a six-year old partnership of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playworks New England<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rihsc.org\/rriri-overview.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhode Island Healthy Schools Coalition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (RIHSC) and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bcbsri.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blue Cross &amp; Blue Shield of Rhode Island<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BCBSRI), has launched an initiative to recognize school professionals who have made it a priority to incorporate safe and healthy play into the school environment during the coronavirus pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recess Rocks in Rhode Island, which BCBSRI has strongly supported for the last six years, has been innovating rapidly to serve schools in a constantly shifting environment. Through this program, Playworks and RIHSC, through funding support from BCBSRI, are helping educators across the state pilot new approaches to incorporating safe and healthy play in their school day. Playworks has offered support to all Rhode Island schools this year, whether they have participated in previous cohorts or are new to the Recess Rocks program.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #438bc5;\">\u201cThe arrival of COVID-19 in early 2020 did more than disrupt our everyday lives. It also upended the school environment with children learning virtually, in a hybrid environment, in person or in a combination of the three,\u201d said Jon Gay, Playworks New England\u2019s Executive Director. \u201cDespite these challenges, educators have taken steps to prioritize play and social-emotional learning, and have created recess systems that help students stay active and connected. It\u2019s these Recess Champions who we want to recognize and celebrate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first educators to be recognized as part of the Recess Champions initiative are <span style=\"color: #8b3e7f;\"><strong>Coleen Smith<\/strong><\/span>, the principal of the Wakefield School in the South Kingstown school district, and <span style=\"color: #8b3e7f;\"><strong>Craig Giarrusso<\/strong><\/span>, a physical education teacher at the Nathanael Greene Elementary School in Pawtucket.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/RECESS-ROCKS-Craig.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5057\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/RECESS-ROCKS-Craig-300x158.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/RECESS-ROCKS-Coleen.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5058\" src=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/RECESS-ROCKS-Coleen-300x158.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/RECESS-ROCKS-Coleen-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/RECESS-ROCKS-Coleen-1024x538.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/RECESS-ROCKS-Coleen-768x403.png 768w, https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/RECESS-ROCKS-Coleen-853x448.png 853w, https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/RECESS-ROCKS-Coleen-1143x600.png 1143w, https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/RECESS-ROCKS-Coleen-634x333.png 634w, https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/new-england\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/05\/RECESS-ROCKS-Coleen.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith noted that at her school students have benefited from recess this year more than any other year. \u201cStudents and staff have been feeling isolated because of the masks and physical distancing requirements. Recess has given them time to be social and active \u2013 it\u2019s the outdoor release and movement break,\u201d Smith said. \u201cRecess has also been important as a time for staff to build rapport with the kids by talking to them, asking them questions and learning about each kid. Recess is the time to make connections and feel engaged with the students at personal level.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith added that the kids have been showing how resourceful and creative they can be. \u201cFor example, in one recess, every kid was given a hula hoop and the kids got creative. The 9- and 10-year-old boys came up with nine ways to use a hula hoop in 25 minutes,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giarrusso, who was part of the Recess Team from Greene that attended Recess Rocks in RI training in 2019, has collaborated with his colleagues to help address the need of students to have safe choices and opportunities to move at recess. \u201cWithout safe choices, students were getting rambunctious and the principal was receiving regular referrals from altercations at recess,\u201d Giarrusso explained. \u201cThe Recess Rocks in RI program was a great fit \u2013 it provided students with positive game and activity options and also gave students the tools to negotiate and resolve conflicts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of those tools was rock, paper, scissors. \u201cThis problem solver really took off and made recess run more smoothly,\u201d said Giarrusso. \u201cIt has been a go-to game on its own, with classes doing rock, paper, scissors challenges during distance learning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #438bc5;\">\u201cWe love hearing about the creative ways schools are innovating around recess and we applaud Coleen and Craig for their ongoing commitment to make recess a priority,\u201d said Jon Gay, Playworks New England\u2019s Executive Director. \u201cWe look forward to recognizing more Recess Champions in the months to come.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: #8b3e7f;\"><strong>During the pandemic, Playworks has partnered with 82 schools across 25 districts to redesign safe and healthy play opportunities for their students.<\/strong><\/span> This includes working with 64 educators through a new Virtual Learning and Play training series and providing weekly curated content to assist educators in bringing play and social-emotional support to every child\u2019s day through<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.playworks.org\/services\/keep-playing\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep Playing subscriptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for 163 educators across the state.
