Why Play Matters

Play is vital for our children’s development of civility, social skills, physical activity, and leadership. Through safe and healthy play, we have an opportunity to make a mark and shift the dynamic for our youngest generation and those that support them. This is our mission at Playworks

With electronics, a lack of kindness in today’s society, and inactive lifestyles on the rise, it’s important to keep kids engaged physically and socially. Playworks, the leading national nonprofit providing safe and healthy play during the school day, has impacted 42,5000 students and 97 schools throughout the mid-Atlantic (DC, VA, MD and West VA), just this year.

It is our collective responsibility as citizens to create an environment for all people, especially our youth, to truly experience the childhood they deserve. At Playworks, our coaches and mentors supply school communities and youth-serving organizations with the skills and the mindset they will need to be successful in their lives as children and adults.

As civility becomes the main focus of schools and school districts, the demand for our program continues to heighten. We are looking for play advocates to help us reach every kid. Our program is applicable to all types of schools and youth-serving organizations. Each demographic or segment deals with their own unique set of challenges (e.g. social justice, bullying, lack of physical activity time, multicultural and non-diverse environments, parent pressure, safety, sharing, and kindness).

Recently released national IMPACT survey results show the impact of Playworks:

  • 90% of staff agree that play and Playworks improved the overall school climate to one of kindness, student leadership, and joy.
  • Teachers recovered an average of 17 hours a year formerly spent on conflict resolution, exclusion, and bullying.
  • 4,000 junior coaches (4th and 5th graders, an average of 12 students per school) participated in the program last year. 90% of teachers reported junior coaches are strong role models, and 87% said junior coaches also improved their academic success.

What is Leadership NOW

Leadership NOW is a giving circle of concerned citizens and advocates who believe in play.

Connections, advice, and funds from Leadership NOW supporters will allow Playworks to enhance our program, hire staff when an entire district needs our services (more and more requests for this), and scale throughout the mid-Atlantic in a sustainable way.

At each Playworks elementary school, there is a sandlot team of junior coaches who learn and practice leadership every day. They understand leadership at their schools happens NOW and they are empowered to shift and/or improve their school cultures from WITHIN.  Leadership NOW funds will allow us to grow our school footprint and serve more junior coach leaders!

I enjoy helping the kids STAY SAFE and PLAY FAIR. Kids need play to release their energy and a lot of times in classes, you don’t get to socialize with your friends so that gives them the time to socialize with their friends.”
