The Playworks Detroit 2013 Get in the Game Luncheon and Game Changer Awards is a signature event to recognize individuals, companies and organizations that are making a positive impact on the well-being of Detroit.<\/p>\n

Invited guests included award recipients, sponsors and their guests, honorary committee members, foundations, corporate, business and government leaders.<\/p>\n

This hour and a half interactive luncheon began with recess games, a Playworks photo gallery and mingling, followed by a pre-set lunch, a video highlighting the Playworks mission, an inspirational guest speaker, Game Changer Awards, and closing remarks.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0GAME CHANGER AWARD RECIPIENTS<\/strong><\/div>\n

Award recipients were selected by community nomination, Playworks staff, and board based on Playworks\u2019 core values: respect, inclusion, healthy play and healthy community. \u00a0In addition, a Game Changer Award is presented for community service.<\/p>\n

Healthy Play<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Beaumont Health System, Healthy Heart Check Program<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u2013 A program pioneered in 2007 to provide free screenings for high school students to identify heart conditions that could lead to sudden death during physical activity.<\/p>\n

Healthy Community<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Fair Food Network\u2019s Double Up Food Bucks Program<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u2013 A program that provides families who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits with the means to purchase more Michigan-grown fruits and vegetables at farmers markets while supporting local food growers and the local food economy.<\/p>\n

Respect<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Just Speak, Inc.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u2013 A program working with children who have experienced abuse or neglect. Just Speak, Inc. is committed to advocating for the holistic healing of young people victimized by physical, sexual, and emotional child abuse and neglect through education and training.<\/p>\n

Inclusion<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0The Detroit Regional Chamber\u2019s Leadership Detroit Program<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0\u2013 A leadership development program founded in 1979 that helps emerging and existing leaders in southeast Michigan develop leadership skills and knowledge of regional issues. The program has over 1500 graduates representing a cross section of the community, including business, organized labor, government, education, media, civic groups, health services and community organizations.<\/p>\n

Community Service<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Bloomfield Hills School District PTO<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0for their support of physical activity and play through organization of a district wide Make a Difference Day campaign in support of Playworks Detroit.<\/p>\n

GUEST SPEAKER<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 2013 Game Changer Awards and Get in the Game Luncheon featured an inspirational speech by TEDX Detroit speaker, David McGhee. David is an award winning mentor, speaker, writer, college instructor, and former Program Director. His life\u2019s mission is to be a voice for the voiceless, chart a path for the lost, shine a light on the invisible, and give hope to the forgotten. \u00a0We were so glad to have him at the Luncheon!<\/p>\n
