Play On! A Message from Randi Hogan, Executive Director

  1. Updates

Dear Playworks Friends,

I am absolutely thrilled to be on board with you and the entire Playworks team. Like many of you, I have happy memories of running out to the playground at school and playing on the swings, jumping rope or organizing a game of dodge ball. Unfortunately many schools today have lost the ability to create safe, caring and happy environments for their students. That’s where Playworks – and you – can make a big difference and turn recess around.

As you know, recess is not just a nice thing to offer – it’s the smart way to help kids succeed in the classroom and to improve the entire school day. Now, because of you, more than 10,000 students in Baltimore and across Maryland have an opportunity to play at recess and throughout the day in ways that are profoundly important socially, emotionally and physically. Together, we are transforming school culture and climate significantly and making play a priority for all kids.

At the heart of our success are our 23 Playworks coaches, our recess rock stars. It was fortuitous that I began during National Teacher Appreciation Week because I had the tremendous pleasure of joining our team in showering our Program Coordinators – coaches – with appreciation. We visited them, one-by-one, in their element: on the playground surrounded by happy kids, eager to play and learn. You can read more about our fun day here.

Even better than reading about what we are doing, I’d like to invite you to come see a recess in action. There’s nothing better than seeing a safe, healthy and organized recess environment for yourself! You may even find yourself joining in the fun and remembering what it was like when your recess was so magical. Call or send me an email; I’ll be delighted to share with you the power of play.

Thank you for your continued support to help kids thrive.

Playfully yours,

Randi Hogan
Executive Director
