Playworks of Greater Washington DC brought safe and healthy play and a productive discussion on the benefits of play to the Health and Wellness Division of the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).

On January 30, 2019, Playworks of Greater Washington DC was honored to team up with the Health and Wellness Division of OSSE for an afternoon of games and meaningful conversations about the value of play.

The afternoon started with an icebreaker and continued with a series of games linked to the discussion of children’s development through play. We addressed three challenges that affect kids’ development at recess—safety, engagement, and empowerment—and how Playworks can utilize games to overcome these challenges.

We ended with an exciting game of Switch, a core Playworks recess game. This fast-paced game empowers students to practice body control and leadership skills such as conflict resolution.

Playworks believes in the power of play to bring out the best in every kid. We are building tomorrow’s citizens through safe, fun, and healthy play at school every day. We provide:

  • Professional training and ongoing development to school staff, paraprofessionals, and after-school care providers to run and maintain great recesses throughout the year
  • On-site consultation and modeling during the school day for school staff who directly support recess through Teamup

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is the State Education Agency for the District of Columbia. Its goal is to raise the quality of education for all DC residents including health and wellness support by working with schools and community-based organizations to promote positive, healthy behaviors and to improve the quality of life for children and youth in the District of Columbia.

It was an awesome afternoon partnering with the Health and Wellness Division of OSSE. Playworks of Greater Washington DC would like to take this opportunity to thank all participants for their active engagement. We look forward to collaborating with OSSE again in the future!
