Hard Times for Recess

In his Fixes column in the New York Times, writer David Bornstein explores what educators might gain if, instead of viewing recess as a liability — a drain on teaching time and a behavioral headache — they saw it as an opportunity to make the school a happier place, contribute to children’s healthy development, and maybe even boost academic performance.

This is the first of a two-part series.

Coaches Corner

According to Coach Amber, an AmeriCorps member and Playworks program coordinator at the Lee Academy Pilot School in Dorchester, "every day is a story."

Take a couple weeks ago: Amber was teaching her students to play switch, one of our core games, during class game time. That's when Mrs. Brown, the second grade teacher (who also served in AmeriCorps!) asked her students what kind of angles make up the Switch court. Instantly, one student yelled out, "wait, that's a right angle!"

Playworks Serves on National Day of Service!

Playworks served with Habitat For Humanity on the National Day of Service to help repaint houses and build a fence around an East Oakland low-income housing community. Check out some of the photos for that captured a day of giving back while having fun at the same time! 2010-11 Visions

All of us in Metro Boston are incredibly excited to be kicking off our 2010-11 school year. We are now delivering programming in 27 low-income schools across Boston, Cambridge, and Revere. We also welcomed two veteran coaches to our office team in July; third year Playmaker CJ Strauss is our new Program Associate, and Glenn Goodrich is bringing his four years experience in Playworks coaching to his new role as a Program Manager. Both Glenn and CJ have already brought a refreshing programmatic lens to our office operations, and we're psyched to have them on the office team.

New Partnership with Brown Brothers Harriman

It was right around lunch time as Playworks' office staff, armed with ball bags, floor tape, and cones, began to set up recess. Only, we weren't on a playground. We were in an office building.

Recess Happy Hour: A Major Success

We were right. Monday nights are just better with recess games, outdoor happy hours, and Playworks.

About 50 people came out to eat delicious pizza, play 4-Square, and support Playworks Metro Boston. Everyone was having such a great time that even some people who came to the restaurant just to eat ended up joining in on the fun!

Recess Happy Hour doubled as a "housewarming."  We had just moved into our new digs at the Brewery Complex in Jamaica Plain, where Bella Luna, the restaurant and lounge the event took place in, is also located.

Playworks' Recess Happy Hour!

Monday, 8/9. Five pm. That's four weeks away. And we know where you'll be.

'Health Management's' Recess 'Resources'

We weren't in an office building. It just looked like it.

Playworks Metro Boston held a corporate volunteer training for Health Management Resources (HMR), a national healthcare company specializing in weight loss and weight management. HMR, along with its Founder and President Larry Stifler's Stifler Family Foundation, has been our sponsoring partner for The Social Innovation Forum.
