We know that all things will be needed in this social networked, information age and leadership skills will be paramount. Playworks provides experiences for our students and young adults that teach them valuable leadership skills (conflict resolution, group management, role modeling).
Playworks offers leadership opportunities to the hundreds of enthusiastic young adults who serve full-time through our schools. Many of these Playworks coaches start with us as AmeriCorps members, committed to serving their community by working with youth and then move on through the ranks to become Playworks staffers. We are creating a generation of leaders who are creative and get great results.
And, each year, Playworks takes hundreds of students in our schools and helps them become leaders and role models for tens of thousands of students. Through our Junior Coach program, students build pride in themselves and their community while learning valuable skills they model for their peers.
Junior coach quote:
"Helping others is important because many people need help in finding the right direction in life," says Aleigha Thompson, a fifth grader and junior coach in New Orleans last year.
"Too many students were losing recess and the opportunity to be physically active at school. Many choose to follow others who are not good role models rather than listening to their own conscience or self. The best thing about being a junior coach is that I can help others. The most important thing I learned was responsibility…other children are watching and I want to be a positive role model."
Coach quote:
Playworks Coach Edith grew up with an ethic of service. Playworks combined her passion to help children with a longstanding commitment to serve her community. "I wanted that connection with kids. With Playworks I get to energize and mobilize students. I can have fun and help children grow. I get to cheer for everyone."
