Alexander Colon from the Maurice J. Tobin K-8 School in Roxbury is a naturally introverted person. At the beginning of the 2012-2013 school was extremely nervous about public speaking, so when he learned was selected as a Junior Coach at the Tobin, he was unsure of his ability to lead games. However, Playwork Coach Dana had complete confidence in Alex and could see his leadership skills.
During the winter months, Alex was given the task of holding indoor recess for a kindergarten class all by himself. He was tasked with teaching the students “Switch”, a game they hadn’t yet learned.
After the indoor recess was complete, the head lunch monitor told Coach Dana that Junior Coach Alex did absolutely fantastic teaching the class and all of the kindergarteners were well-behaved as they waited in line for their turn. The next morning, during the morning announcements Coach Dana gave Alex a shoutout over the school's PA system letting the entire school know about what he was able to do and how awesome it was. Over the course of the school year, Alex transformed from a shy student to a youth leader in and out of the classroom.
