Coach FAQ

Playworks program coordinators are full-time positions, responsible for planning and implementing play and physical activity programming during recess, in school and outside of school hours at a public school.


Below is a typical day's schedule at school for a Playworks coach.

A Sample AmeriCorps Program Coordinator's day    
(schedule differs slightly between schools)

8:30 a.m. Arrive at school, put away backpack, and check into the front office
  Give as many High-5's as I can to students as they get off bus and enter school.
8:40 -9:30 a.m. Finish paperwork, check Playworks' emails and return any phone calls
9:35 - 9:45 a.m. Review lesson plans for today's Class Game Times1
  Set-Up equipment and prep for first class
9:45 - 10:15 a.m. Meet class out on the playground and run first Class Game Time
10:15 - 10:20 a.m. Set up playground for recess: check for hazards, chalk lines and set out cones
10:20 - 10:55 a.m. Go over lesson plans for second Class Game Time and gather equipment
  Lead second Class Game Time
10:55 - 11:10 a.m. Check-in with Junior Coaches and assign tasks for Recess2
  Check-in with parent volunteers and assign tasks
11:10 - 11:20 a.m. Check out equipment to Kindergarten and 1st grade students coming out to Recess,
  Play game of the week and help with conflict resolution (ro-sham-bo),
  Return to equipment area and check equipment back in,
  Check-in with Junior Coaches3 about Recess
11:20-11:30 a.m. Check out equipment to 2nd and 3rd grade students coming out to Recess,
  Help Junior Coaches facilitate a recess tournament
  Return to equipment area and check equipment back in
11:35 - 12:05 p.m. Prep for 4th and 5th grade Recess
  Check-in with Junior Coaches and assign tasks for Recess
  Check out equipment to students coming out to Recess
  Run game of the week
  Return to equipment area and check equipment back in
  Check-in with Junior Coaches about Recess
12:05 - 1:00 p.m. Go over lesson plans for third Class Game Time
  Meet another class on the playground and run Class Game Time
  Clean up equipment from the playground yard
1:00 p.m. Take a lunch/bathroom break
2:15 - 2:45 p.m. Make lesson plans for next week
2:45 - 3:00 p.m. Prep for After School Program4
3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Run the After School Program
5:00 - 5:30 p.m. Clean up After School Program space, ensure all kids are picked up, and call parents
6:30-8:00 p.m. Head to Leagues5 and coach co-ed volleyball team
8:15 p.m. Head home smiling

Recess2 create a safe and inclusive playground yard.
Junior Coach Program3 organize a youth leadership program.
Class Game Time1 lead individual classes in skills building, cooperative games, and recess based activities.
After School Program4 either collaborate w/existing ASP or organize a homework,snack and physical activity period for 15 students.
*Note some programs consist of a Before School Program
Leagues5 recruit and coach students for the developmental sports leagues.
