The Associated Press today ran an article on recess coaches which has been picked up by several news organizations. The article continues the discussion about what happens on school playgrounds and the role that a coach can play. While we’ve been putting coaches on school playgrounds longer than anyone else, it’s great to hear what others have to say about the issue - and simply the fact that they are talking about it. AP shows the value of supporting play while addressing the others’ concerns to provide the learning experiences from self-motivated play.

As an organization that highly values childhood learning through play, we are working to put more play back onto our recess yards. After 14 years on the playground, we are confident that we have a formula that works. Teachers and principals want us back every year because a healthy recess experience has a direct impact on learning in the classroom. And on the playground, and our coaches are some of the most beloved and popular kids at the school. This happens because we’re providing a positive play experience empowering students to be the owners of their playground.

The important thing here is that the discussion on the value of play both at school and in a children’s daily lives has begun and is growing. It’s becoming clear that the one thing we agree on is that play is an essential part of childhood and development. The discussions will continue and the issue will evolve, and we’re happy to be a part of this growing movement for play.
