Creating a Powerful Education for Our Children

Raising a generation with the vision and collective will to make all the other changes that we need.
December 22, 2011

Although we probably didn’t think of it this way at the time, our childhoods were full of informal education outside of school. This is where we were taught social norms, empathy, teamwork, problem solving and leadership by playing and learning from other, older kids. Unfortunately, it seems that many of those experiences are disappearing for today’s kids.

There are 22 million elementary age children in the US today; the majority spend 25+ hours in school each week. We can help make these hours richer and create more powerful learning environments by providing programs that teach and value empathy, teamwork and leadership along with a rigorous academic curriculum.

At Playworks, we believe fiercely in the power of play as a tool for social, emotional, cognitive and physical learning. Play opens our hearts and minds. As a human right, all children deserve the freedom to safe, healthy and meaningful play. This is why for the past 15 years, we’ve made it our mission to create and support opportunities for play and physical activity in schools. We understand the complexities of raising the next generation, but we also understand that it’s important to take what we’ve learned from the past and commit to building schools where you and I would send our children. This is our moral imperative.

How can we support social, emotional and physical education in our schools?
