Game of the Week

For all those summer camp attendees out there... the Game of the Week is Gaga Ball! Gaga Ball is often played during summer camp in a pit or surrouded by walls so that game is smooth and fast, but it can also be played on playgrounds.
 

Big Play in the Big Apple

Nipping at the heals of the largest Recess Roll-Out in the history of Playworks (100 staff and coaches/combined 216,316 miles traveled/72 schools/9 cities), we took school recess and children’s play to our biggest audience yet; the 1.5 million visitors and 500,000 commuters who will enter New York City’s Times Square through July 8, 2011!

In honor of Orchard Gardens Pilot School in Playworks Metro Boston experience, the Game of the Week is Orchard Gardens' Playworks After School Program's very own game--Chewbacca--from the Invent-A-Game Showcase.

Sharing New Games

Recently, I got an email from a software engineer, Ron, who heard an interview with me on our local NPR affiliate and was inspired to share a game he had created. Ron’s game, Logistics, is intended to inspire kids to play with the ideas of planning involved in the sorting and movement of objects--essentially a playful version of the management challenges inherent in fulfillment.

Jackson at Play

Nine rock star coaches made their way to Jackson, Mississippi last month to showcase Playworks on school playgrounds for one week. Here is what they heard and experienced:

"Playworks has been here only two days and my stress level has decrease by half!" -Fifth grade teacher.

"Respect takes years to earn but you got it from our students in record time! Now I feel like we will have a calmer and safer school next year!" -School counselor
